Q&A

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you started writing?

As the daughter of a librarian, I grew up around books. From Nancy Drew to The Hunger Games, I’ve read it all. I realized my love of storytelling in middle school journalism and that dream transformed into video journalism in high school. Even though the medium switched, my love of stories and the story-telling process remained. This propelled me to get a degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Arkansas. I went on to become a teacher, showing other students the magic behind the lens. Later I transitioned to corporate, and found myself missing my creative outlet. Little did I know, I would find it in the form of writing.

I had grown up writing stories here and there, and always felt called to write a book, but thought I would do it later in life. The writer in me was always brewing, but Sarah Adams had this post on Instagram about telling your story and trusting yourself to start, which gave me the permission I didn’t know I needed to dive in.

Whether I’m working on my next book or interviewing authors for my podcast, Where I Left Off, I have the opportunity to spread my love of reading and literature.

2. What inspired your debut?

I was a Video Production teacher, and I unfortunately got burned out and left education altogether. When I was in the classroom I felt like the general advice for teachers was to suck it up and do it for the kids or quit. I just wanted something to relate to that captured how hard the job was, but wasn’t too heavy. I felt really alone and would have loved to have a piece of media that captured my feelings.

When I decided to start writing, I wanted to create a book that teachers and non-teachers alike could appreciate, one that balances humor, mystery, and romance while also exploring the realities of service professions and how they can be both draining and rewarding at the same time. I knew I had to write this story, and I’m very thankful Elle and Cohen popped into my head.

3. Which character was your favorite to write—and why?

Cohen was difficult to write at first, and since we went on a journey together, I would have to claim him as my favorite. I have several traits in common with Elle, so she came naturally. With Cohen, his laid back nature, and writing in the brain of a guy took a second to get used to. His inner dialogue was especially fun to create, and helped remind me what it’s like to be a first year teacher. I was enamoured by his resilience and the kindness he showed to Elle along the way. He has a really good balance of letting her shine and making her better, while growing himself. Writing the other characters’ reactions to his naivety and proclivity to be seen as the golden child by admin were equally as entertaining.

4. Do you have a favorite trope or theme you love writing?

Friends to lovers is my absolute favorite trope to read, but forced proximity is a close second. I appreciate how the friends to lovers trope cuts out the awkward get to know you stage, and goes right for the tension and angst that comes from trying to figure out if you should confess your feelings. The way they appreciate the small things about each other and have a solid foundation from the jump is so rewarding to read.

With forced proximity, I can’t turn the pages fast enough to see how they’re next interaction will go, when they have to cross paths whether they like each other or not.

5. What do you hope readers feel when they finish your books?
The world is exhausting right now. I want readers to be able to get a laugh, while trying to figure out WhoDunit and counting down the pages until Cohen and Elle kiss. Sometimes you just need an escape, and hopefully this book that feels very Abbott Elementary meets Only Murders in the Building is exactly what they need.
6. What are you working on next? Any sneak peeks?

I am currently working on book two! The entire series takes place during a calendar school year. The first book takes place during fall semester, this book will be during Christmas break, and book three will be spring semester. Cohen and Elle go on a trip to Santa Claus, Indiana with Cohen’s entire family. They are in the first book a little bit, but you’ll really get to know them over the course of this novel. It’s all candy canes and gingerbread until a guest at the inn is stabbed with a vintage Christmas tree topper. They have to race to solve the case before turning in their room keys, while simultaneously trying to make the most of the holiday season.

Co-Writing Romantasy with Helen Domico & Anna Applegate

This week we are featuring two of our favorite Romantasy authors at the shop. This series has been a top seller of 2025. We asked them a series of questions and loved everyting they had to say in response.

How did the two of you decide to co-write Romantasy?

Anna had taken a break from writing for about a year, but one day the beginnings of a book came to her. We went back and forth all day on Marco Polo, coming up with ideas for what it could look like and she asked if Helen would want to write it with her. The rest is history! As far as Romantasy specifically, it's both of our favorite genres, so we fell into that without even having to think twice.

What does your writing process look like? Do you split POVs or chapters?

We do extensive plotting for each chapter so we each know what needs to happen. But we write in different colors and once we’ve both read over the text we change it to black. Because we are both busy with full time jobs and kids, sometimes we leave off mid-sentence, but the other person can pick right up where the other left off. We each touch every single sentence in the book, which we think helps make it sound more like one voice instead of two.

This response in particular was so cool to hear. We have hear a lot of authors that split POV or split chapters but never just picking up where one left off. Thats very unique.

What strengths do each of you bring to the partnership?

We work really well together. If one person is busy the other person is able to pick up the slack. Helen tends to be a bit more logical and Anna can be a bit more emotional. But you need both so it works really well together!

Who usually pushes the spice level?

We are usually on the same page for spice! Bring it on!

Do you ever prank each other with draft suggestions?

Hahaaha no, but maybe we need to start!

Can you tease any future collaborations?

We are currently about 5 chapters into our next series and we’re so excited! You can look forward to a mentor/mentee, hate to love, and maybe some secret societies 👀

ooooo we are so ready!

What events do you have coming up in 2026?

  • Romantasy Con in Los Angeles February 26-28 2026

  • Imaginarium Washington DC June 5-6 2026

  • Romantasy in the Valley Hunt Valley MD, July 25, 2026

  • Fan Grrrl Orlando, Fl, September 10-12 2026

Master the Craft: Writing Tips That Every Aspiring Author Needs

This past Saturday, I had the privilege of sitting down with two local indie authors and four aspiring writers from our community. It was an incredible opportunity to pick the brains of the published authors and gain insight into the world of publishing—everything from taking your story from an idea to a finished, printed book. Whether writing is a dream you’re working toward or you’re already deep in the writing process, I hope you find these takeaways valuable.

Authors:

CB never set out to be an author. In fact, it sort of happened by chance, but she’s fully embraced the journey. Kristie, on the other hand, always knew she was meant to be a writer. It’s something that has always felt natural to her.

CB shared a valuable piece of advice: “Don’t be afraid to write outside your comfort zone.”

When asked for tips on writing a sex scene, CB passed along some fantastic advice she’d received from fellow author Brynne Asher: “Start in the middle and work your way back.” This really struck me. I’d never considered starting a scene from the middle. Like most writers, I always assumed you had to begin at the start and work your way through to the end.

Did you know there are generally two types of writers? Pantsers and Plotters. Pantsers go with the flow, writing based on the vibe or feelings they’re experiencing in the moment. Plotters, on the other hand, plan everything out, usually with an outline. Which one are you? There’s no right or wrong answer—everyone has their own approach.

When asked for general advice, both authors emphasized: “Don’t be afraid to try new things or scrap ideas that aren’t working.”

I also asked if they had any advice for their past selves or for future writers. They both said, “Get a tribe.” A supportive group of people who will uplift and empower you is invaluable. They understand the challenges, push you to keep going, and help you stand tall when you feel like giving up.

Some other key takeaways that truly resonated with me:

  • The romance community, for the most part, is incredibly supportive.

  • There’s enough room for every writer—this is not a competition.

  • The romance community is empowering. It’s not a cutthroat industry (well, not usually).

  • Don’t hesitate to ask questions in writing groups, even if you think it’s a silly one. Chances are, someone else is wondering the same thing.

Now, onto some other important writer-related topics:

Alpha Readers

  • Alpha readers critique your work as you write. They give feedback on scenes in progress.

  • Don’t ask your best friend unless they can be completely unbiased. You need someone who will give you honest feedback, even if it’s not what you want to hear.

Beta Readers

  • Beta readers receive the completed manuscript and provide their feedback after reading it in full.

  • How do you find beta readers? Look for ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) teams or join Facebook groups.

  • Make sure they’re passionate about your genre! While not absolutely essential, it helps if they’re part of your target audience.

Handling Critiques

  • How do you handle critiques without taking it personally? Remember that one person’s opinion isn’t the final word. What one reader doesn’t enjoy, another will love.

Writing a Sex Scene

  • Kristie offered a simple, but powerful piece of advice: “You’ll know when a sex scene works. If it turns you on, your readers will feel it too.”

Editors: What You Need to Know

  • Developmental Editor: Focuses on the big picture, story structure, pacing, etc.

  • Copy/Line Editor: Goes line by line, refining the language and making sure the text flows smoothly.

  • Proofreader: Checks grammar, punctuation, and overall readability.

How do you know if you and an editor will mesh? Ask for a sample edit! Many editors offer free sample critiques so you can see if their style fits with your work.

Pre-Submission Editing Tips

  • Have your computer read your manuscript aloud to you. This helps you catch awkward phrasing, unintended rhymes, or minor issues you might miss while reading it yourself.

Finding Your Tribe

  • Look for people with similar interests or those who are involved in similar writing communities on social media. Building your tribe is key!

Testing the Waters

  • Consider entering unpublished writers’ contests. It’s a great way to connect with editors, agents, and publishing houses while testing your writing in a more formal setting.

Spotlight on Indie Author Bianca Miller: A Journey of Emotion and Romance

Today, we’re thrilled to feature the incredibly talented indie author Bianca Miller. With one heartfelt contemporary romance novel already published and a second on the way, Bianca’s writing is quickly capturing the hearts of readers. Let’s take a closer look at Bianca’s journey, her work, and what makes her stand out in the indie author community.

The Books: Diving Into Love and Life

Bianca Miller is the author behind Diving In, a contemporary romance set in a small beach town that explores themes of found family, emotional growth, and the tension between a young girl and her brother’s best friend. Readers of Diving In are treated to a touching, relatable story of how relationships can blossom in the most unexpected ways.

Coming soon on April 29th is The Breath Between Us, a summer romance that promises to sweep readers off their feet. What makes this book particularly unique? HE falls first and hard.

A Love for Enemies to Lovers (But Not Accidental Pregnancy)

When asked about her favorite romance trope, Bianca confesses her love for the Enemies to Lovers storyline. I think we can mostly agree that there is something special about two characters who start off at odds but find common ground and attraction through conflict and chemistry. It’s the perfect mix of tension and passion that fans of romance adore. On the flip side, there’s one trope Bianca does not want to write—Accidental Pregnancy.

The Writing Journey

Bianca’s journey into writing began long before her published books. She’s been crafting stories since she was young, starting with diaries and fanfiction, and eventually transitioning into writing her own original works. Though Bianca finds it easy to generate ideas and express emotions through writing, she is not immune to the struggles that come with being an author—like imposter syndrome.

Surrounded by so many talented writers in the book community, it’s easy to compare yourself to others, especially when you see fellow authors landing big deals. But Bianca’s advice is clear: "At the end of the day, I set out to write books, and that’s exactly what I’m doing. That’s my biggest accomplishment."

Upcoming Releases: Mark Your Calendars

Bianca’s fans won’t have to wait long for her next release. The Breath Between Us is set to hit shelves on April 29th—and for those who can’t get enough of her heartfelt beach-town romances, this one promises to be another unforgettable read.

Future Goals: Big Dreams Ahead

Looking ahead, Bianca has clear goals in mind. For this year, she’s aiming to land a literary agent, and in five years, she hopes to sign a deal with a traditional publishing company. But no matter where her journey takes her, her long-term goal remains simple: to keep writing "silly little stories" for the rest of eternity.

Indie Publishing: The Path Chosen

Bianca knew from the start that indie publishing was the right path for her. After hearing the horror stories of querying and rejection, she decided that she would write a book—and publish it—no matter what. It’s this determination and drive that makes her a perfect fit for the indie world.

Themes of Emotion: Writing from the Heart

When asked about the themes that run through her books, Bianca shared that she writes about what she knows best: emotions. As someone who’s always been highly emotional, she channels her big feelings into her characters and plots, wanting readers to experience the full spectrum of emotions she’s felt over the years. She believes emotions, while sometimes dark and complicated, can also be beautiful and empowering. Her stories aim to make readers feel everything—and that’s something fans have come to love about her writing.
